Senior Portraits using Off-Camera Flash and the LunaGrip, with Alycia White.

Alycia White is best known for her modern, stylish senior portrait work. In just a few short years, she’s developed an enviable photographic style, a thriving business, and become a sought-after speaker at international photography conventions.

Alycia keeps her lighting simple, yet dramatic. When natural light is not cooperating, she turns to her speedlight mounted to a Westcott LunaGrip. The LunaGrip gives her studio-quality lighting in any situation, and it's fast and easy to setup. She’s not a fan of complicated lighting – because there is amazing beauty in simplicity, when done right.

The following images complement her instructional video, giving insight in to her camera and flash settings.

Using off-camera flash and the LunaGrip for senior portraits with Alycia White from Kevin Kubota on Vimeo.

Alycia's basic lighting technique here was to set her ambient exposure manually to be about 1 f-stop below normal. This creates a rich background and allows the ambient light to act as the fill-light when she adds the flash.

The speedlight was mounted to the LunaGrip and manually adjusted to give her a normal facial exposure. Notice how beautifully the LunaGrip shapes the subjects face with soft, directional light.

Alycia uses Yongnuo flash transceivers to control her flash from the camera position.
